What Went Wrong: glory pools

Post by lingolas »

I'm gonna start this topic with Glory Pools.

For those that dont know, glory pools are guild structures that provide glory. The glory refills slowly over time. A guild leader is the only person who has the ability distribute glory to his or her members. Back in the old days, this was the only method to obtain glory.

Glory pools were removed due to abuse
. Some guild leaders built multiple glory pools and selfishly only bath themselves with glory.

The administrators reponse to this was to remove glory pools completely
. I don't know if there was any other reasons, but the we were lead to believe that glory pools must go because of abuse.

The consequence of having no glorypools has been devastating. Here are the many reasons.
1. Players no longer see a need to join a guild
2. Guilds become less important
3. Guild members have less incentive to obey guild policies or follow any hiarchy in ranks.
4. Guild leaders give out less quests because there there was no glory to reward with.

The positive consequences of having no glorypools:
1. no single guild leaders who can abuse the glory pools thus prevent a single person from amassing glory

Conclusion:
Because an airplane has trouble landing properly some of the time, we decided that we should never have any airplanes at all. In otherwords, we got rid of the glory pools completely to solve a simple minor problem. As a result, we unknowingly generate many other problems. As far as i can tell, these problems still exist even till today.

There has been much outcry about the fact that the caretakers are too inactive to provide meaningful quests. Caretakers are not the only one who should be charged with making quests. Where are the guild leaders?

Solution:
1. Reinstate the glorypools.
2. Deduct the glory obtained from epic leveling. How? yet to be discussed.
3. leaders cannot grant glory to themselves
4. only one glorypool per guild
5. pool regeneration is based on
a. the # of guild members
b. the activitiy of its members (how active)
c. guilds victories/loss
d. maybe some other factors
6. Glory pool that accumulates over 100 glory will reset back to zero
7. Glory pools drain a small amount of gold from the guild's bank
8. When there's no gold in the bank, glory pools stop producing glory

If we ever implement this, I hope it will bring guilds back to its glorious days. I hope that guild leaders will make more quests for their members, and I hope that the new system will discourage many potential abuses.

actually, the leader never could give glory to themselves, but they did do it to guildmates, in huge lump sums.
Basically, they would give someone else in the guild leadership rank, which then meant that the two people could divide up the lumps of glory between them :)

It was one of those things that went out of control very quickly.

And soon it wasn't even abuse, but more of a 'trying to keep up with player x' that was abusing it hardcore.

became like part of the game, abuse.

I believe Lingo is right in this matter. If it is possible to bring back pools(with restrictions of course), I believe it would be a great boon for guilds and guild masters.
