Bad area and/or mob themes

Post by Silvanos »

1st: Jeremiah the bull frog, comes from a stupid song as far as i know and so it shouldnt be in DL.

2nd: In Coral Depths there are several mobs that refer to Disney's the Little Mermaid, like Sebastian the lobster, etc.

This is a continuation of the thread that is now locked, but still has unfinished business :) Post other problems like the ones above in this thread, so we can keep it organized.

Rather than starting my own topic, I'm adding here. The Keep of the Warlock has a room at the top of the tower with all the guards in it (I'll edit with the actual directions when I get back home from my errands) that references Mt. Doom and Dread Lord <something>. The area itself is pretty generic, so I didn't notice much else that really needed to be changed just yet.
Just my thoughts ^_^

That Mt. Doom and the dread lord Melkor or something, doesnt even exist in the game, so what does it matter? (and if it does, someone tell me how to get there, i'm curious.)

PS (If anyone knows where Melkor is, tell me, i have a father to avenge. )

PSS Read my Bio on the game if you ever see me, its the only RP thing i have going for me so please don't make me change it. :(

Well, that was my second point. We don't have to always change an area - we can MAKE that Dread Lord a powerful mob in another area nearby, or even put him into the storyline somewhere.

I'll post more about it later, but I'm writing a story out so it might be awhile ^^

Mount Doom does exist...I know how to get there in ROD, but I'm not sure of exactly where it is in DL. I belive it is in the same area that contains Dave, the introspective Bard...hes in an inn at the northeast of the area, there's goblin spies, and I believe that Mount Doom is in the east of the area.

At any rate - Mt. Doom is a feature of the Tolkein estate, and the much-feared Legal Council of Elrond won't be pleased that we're not paying royalties for its name.

i think in this situation, mount doom is not in reference to any copyrighted material, i think its more like a mountain, called Doom ;)

It's like naming things 'Planet Hell' or 'The City of Despair' not a very original name in any event ;)

the area is Miden'nir, between tarsonis and midian cities.

Eh, we'd get in more trouble for having Orcs - the Tolkein estate is still trying to sue every MMORPG for using 'em.

Good - that just means that we have no multi-million dollar legal team to keep this place from being wiped off the face of gaming. Either way - bah on you. This branch of the conversation would best be kept to PMs, so if you want to continue...

i do not know the legality of having the name 'orc' in our mud, if someone from Tolkien said, remove it, we probably would.

As for areas, i do receive emails every so often from the original creators of various areas, as far as the areas go, we've been given a green light to make whatever modifications we deem appropriate. (Legally, we could anyways, but morally we can also proceed without any problems)

The only real threat we would ever need to worry about would be TSR, in the past they actively brought down m.u.d.s and any other game which was too much of a copy and paste of their content.
Modules (campaigns) especially.

Saying we have a half elf, or a barbarian won't get us into trouble, but basing an area on a near word for word description of something TSR has already created is a no-no :)

All that aside.. eventually i would like 100 percent custom areas, but we make do with what we have for now.

We are currently testing a building port, as well as a website for the builders, once they are ready, we will require builders.

For those who are super serious about contributing new areas, and possibly using the new quest creator celeborn has created, they will be able to post here, and i will consider them as participants in the project.

Thanks for the input on the existing areas, i think having replacement areas for most of the lower level ones would be a great first step to cleaning up the theme, and removing those old stock areas.

(before anyone gets all excited, this will be for the replacement of small / poorly written areas / areas people do not need - we will not replace larger / commonly used areas yet)

Silvanos and other builders to be: If you replace area's like armageddon please at least replace them with an area of equivellant difficulty so people can still have a place to level. (Make em realtivly easy to get to, so non-magic players dont need to beg for a portal to them or have to spend money to get there.) I'm not saying this so you'll make it easy, i'm just saying make it accessable to new players.

as noted in my previous message - areas like armageddon will not be immediately replaced, it will be a non-issue.

all possible concerns will be met, and we will ensure there is zero sadness at the replacement of an area, no worries.

areas which are commonly used - will not be replaced for quite some time.

Issy rebuilt the chessboard but you could never go and fight there again. I don't think she ever really finished it.

If you do decide to put it back in can you make it for levels 25-35 ish?

no, i finished chessboard, several times, but it was too large with all the secrets i had put inside, secret doors, rooms, creatures, trapdoors, triggers, levers, so it would just crash the mud.
