QUESTION: is it possible for a power supply to die after putting in a perfectly good (apparently) brand new hard drive? it was an 80gb 7200 rpm maxtor drive (i think maxtor). The most my computers ever had was a 6 gig... i donno if the shock of such a wicked hard drive could kill the power supply, but im startin to wonder.... please, i need help with this, im suffering severe DL withdrawal... its been a FREAKING WEEK!!! |

Possible? Of course. It is unlikely that the hard drive is the cause of the problem, however. Power supplies, especially the cheap generic kinds that come with cases, have a tendency to die sooner rather than later. If you have had it for as long as the 6gb HDD, then it could have just been time for it to go. Like any component, they do not last forever. |

ditto, and to continue with that --> when you buy a power supply don't buy the cheapest one, do your homework, check out the noise level of various P.S's, and the types of fans, fan speed, and quantity of fans in the unit. a power supply is critical to having a safe and reliable system. sometimes when a power supply dies, it makes a voltage surge, and well, takes out many components at once. (you don't want that)

okay... i found out theres nothing wrong with the hard drive (phew) (also, i bought it, 80gigs, brand new, 60 bucks (CANADIAN!!!)) BUT: the motherboard or cpu might be dead, and its the kind where you cant seperate the two (damn you ecs!!), so id have to buy a new mobo AND cpu, which sucks majorly... i cant get on dl from the school and my library is smelly 
the power supply was, apparently, dead. got a new one (free 50 dollar one) and a semi-new case (free 15 dollar one) also, all the work thats being done is free, by professionals.... wheee, im a 15 y/o with connections!! btw, thanks all for your help/suggestions. i hope i can see y'all (ew, i said it) on dl soon

hehe, least with the new case im getting ill probably not overheat as much i was often 'round 57 degrees CELSIUS!! EDITNESSESES (damn you, double post!) sorry |

if you've got that much wrong with the thing get a new computer without a hard drive and stick the one you just bought into it. |

You should really learn to work on your computer yourself. At your age you should be getting all the exposure to computers you need to be able to deeply expand your knowledge of them. It is not hard to learn how to troubleshoot computers on a hardware level, repair them, upgrade them, build them, etc etc. It is very useful to be able to do. Plus it gets you chicks. |

oh, b'lieve me, weems... i do know lots 'bout computers.... i just had no clue what the crap was wrong with it BUT ITS FIXED NOW FOR FREE SO HUZZAH AND THE LIKE

lots can disclude some, which evidently was part of what was the problem.... if thats even structured (the sentence) correctly, but oh well, i dont really care.... anyhoo... yepp and i did put it in right, the power suplly was just not high enough wattage 'nuff to do it |
