Post subject:  64 bit processing system

Instead of the Pent 4 processors, I am considering building a new computer around the more expensive 64 bit processors. Honestly don't know a heck of a lot about them, but what I have heard sounded good.

What experience, if any have you people had in this subject?

By "64 Bit Processors" do you mean, AMD? The AMD Athlon 64's are cheaper than the top of the line Pentium 4's, and in general have better performance.

Just realized my wording can be read two different ways. Yes the AMD processors are what I had my eye on. Word I heard was that they take over-clocking fairly well.

Currently:

The newest Pentium 4's (Prescott):
Hottest P4 ever made, makes lots of heat and noise (Due to strong fan needed, more so when overclocking)
Need to have one at least 1ghz faster than an "equivolent" AMD processor for same performance.
No 64-bit capabilities (yet)
Can be overclocked but needs VERY efficient cooling solution.
Currently the only way to get PCI-e motherboards.

AMD's newest Athlon 64's (Socket 939):
Coolest running Athlon's ever, very good heat and can run with less powerful fans.. Very overclockable (Though again, you'll be on a powerful fan)
Built in memory controller, allows for better memory bandwidth and speed.
64-bit
No PCI-e yet... But this should be here in the next 2 months.

Top of the line AMD chip: $850 (roughly)
Top of the line P4 chip: $999 (roughly)

Which wins the benchmarks? AMD.

In general, AMD's cost $50 to $100 less than P4s of equivolent performance. Traditionally (As in, has been the case for the past 4 years), AMD chips run 66% as fast as Intel (2ghz vs 3ghz) but have the same performance.

My vote is AMD :)

I built my parents a computer with one of the 64-bit Athlons, and I am now jealous of their computer.

Go AMD, it's always better. Hyperthreading is just Wintel's feeble attempt to emulate AMD.

Have not heard a bad thing about AMD to date. When the 64 bit processors were first coming out, I do remember having some problems getting Lexmark printer programs to work with the computers (was a Lexmark tech at the time). That was Lexmarks fault for poor program quality.

Currently I have been browsing the fancy water cooling systems, and temperature regulators out there. Combined with a nice Aluminum case temp control should be pretty decent :)

Next project after this one: Learn to use Unix better.
