Personally i think DL is the most expansive MUD ive seen. Wannabes like retromud really bite and so many people play them. DL is great at peak hours but people leave really early and it would be nice if more people would play. Maybe DL should spend a bit of money on a few ads so MUD players might see it and possibly bring more players in.

Willing to donate? :) Cel pays for the game's hosting out of his own pocket, and codes in his free time after working all day.. It doesn't make any money, and legally can't.

All it takes is some really good PR work within the Caretaker community. Even so, people can add DL to their own websites and include the name in the meta tags so when people from outside the MUD check out the website, they'll find out what it's about via third-party advertising. You can have people write reviews on mudconnector.com and such and post DL on all the large MUD-based search engines. The reason alot of people play MUDs where huge player bases are concerned is mainly word-of-mouth from their friends or stumbling onto it while searching for a new MUD to play on.

So spread the word: have people who play now design their websites to include Dark Legacy in any aspect that's findable through searching. :)

august 20th of 2000 i was learning about 128 bit bitvectors in CircleMUD, and joined a mud advertising newsgroup, saw Celeborns advertisement in there about his new mud that was 2 weeks old, and needed players, so here i am :)

(btw, it was august 4-5 of 2000 that Dark Legacy was opened i believe, for those who like to keep those tidbits of information) :)

*editted to fix wrong word :)

More like opened. Developement in earnest started in 1999. Ideas were being thrown around in '98

The question is, can DL cope with large amount of players?

Think of mining problem, how long would TSQ go with all those people in with all buffs, epics can get really spammy and laggy with a large group.

I believe DL should be optimized to reduce lag with a larger amount of players in the same room...

Also, if there are incoming changes, I'd suggest getting them in before advertising. New players would get confused if they suddenly went from multi-class to classless system... as they had learned how to play by the current system...

I came to DL Nov. 2000.

I've never once spoke to Celeborn in all that time.

I came in late 2000, november-decemberish.

there was a decientish player base then. i found the mud because of a browser based game i programmed for (called Dark Legacy). we were both on an online game rating site (forget what its called) and we were dark legacy, the one that isnt the mud. decided to try the mud out :-p

I think I joined when some guy mentioned it on IRC...on IRChat.tv I think. I haven't been back to that IRC server in a while...I should see how it's going.
