According to the common belief, Moses came down of mt. Sainai with the ten commandments written by god himself. What if Moses made the commandments himself instead of God? Afterall, he has been on that mountain before so it is very possible for him to have carved the tablets first and left it there for later. Do you think this is possible? and why or why not?

Who cares? They're good rules to live by, even if they do hinder us from keeping the human population down.

If he meant it to con everyone, then i think he did it so that people would just freakin listen to him, cause he had a good idea and went with it. He musta thought "It's time SOMEBODY did something to make the world a better place."

I would like to quote Douglas Adam's book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Get ready, its a long one but funny and true.

"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Westarn Sprial Arm of the galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.
Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight milion miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green plant whose ape descended life forms are so amazingly primitive, that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.
This planet has -or rather had- a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largly concerned with the movements of small green peices of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasnt the peices of paper that were unhappy.
And so the problem remained; lots of people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.
Many were increasingly of the opinion that that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should have left the oceans.
And then, one Thursday, nearly two-thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realised what it was that had been going wron all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and nobody would have to be nailed to anything."

As soon as someone figures out how we can all get along, we'll be happy. Moses just figured he'd try something to help us along.

The commandments are no doubt good for society, but the question lies in its legitimacy.
------
About the hitch hiker guide to the galaxy, he forgot Buddha. Buddha and his 8 noble paths are supposed to rid of suffering and anguish, in other words, bringing happiness.

Lingolas: A slight rewording of your oringial post would raise the chance of Moses tricking everyone. There was no need to crave the tablets first, then find them later. Moses was on the mountion long enough to make them on that one trip. Remember the hebrews began to doubt because Moses was gone for so long. Moses was trained in all the arts and knowledge of the Egyptions. So he had the skill, the time, and perhaps a motive for such a deception.

So it is possible that he decieved the hebrews. Personally I do not believe this is the case, it is a matter of faith as such a thing can not be proven. Even if we found the Ark of the Covenent and were allowed to scientificly examine it, we may still not be able to answer this question.

However you look at it, those 10 commandments have been one of the most important code of conduct ever wrote, when you look at it's impact on history. It was used as the base for many legal systems in use today. Its impact on history and law is so great that it renders its legitimacy a mute point. Yes there have been other great codes of conduct, the eight fold path of budda, the code of Hammurabi, ect., but none of them have had the impact of the 10 commandants. Because of this it desearves a place in history, divinely inspired or not.

Some impact on history, people shatter what they stand for everyday, and don't get me started about what governments are doing.
