If following God doing "good things" leads you to hell and following the devil doing "evil things" means an eternity of afterlife in paradise. Would you turn away from God and follow the devil?

I'd do good things even if it meant hell. Or subscribe to a different religion so i could do good things and go to heaven

well... i kinda like the idea of being nice, not because i belive i will go to some great place after i die, but because i dont want everyone around to be in "hell" before they do, if this means eternal damnation, then so be it.

I think its quite simple if you take away all the connotations ppl have with those words...
Action 1-> Good Consequence
Action 2-> Bad Consequence
Assuming that this theory is absolute and there are no other options (and ppl have a blank slate) and also assuming that we know for sure that there is a heaven and hell (beforehand), then ppl will choose the action that has a good consequence. I believe it would happen even if ppl didnt have a blank slate..it would change over time. "Evil actions" leading to a good consequence would not have the connotation of what we think of as evil now. It would be "Good". Even if we are complex animals, we would still react this way. Research Ivan Pavlov and/or for an example with humans: read a Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, although this has more to do with conditioning...Over time however ppl would still connect any action with a good consequence to be "good" and a bad consequence to be "bad". For example, if a person is naturally intelligent and gets good grades but gets bullied for being a nerd, then on average...this bad consequence will lead the person to either think that getting a good grade is not as "good" as it would be normally or stop getting good grades altogether in order to avoid the bad consequence. The opposite is also true.

exactly, well said. My theory is that no one cares about God or Jesus. People only care about the consequences.
of course there are exceptions just like everything else.
